Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
